Beltane Fire Festivals | Celebrating Fertility & Renewal

Beltane (pronounced Bel-tayn) is one of the great pagan fire festivals, celebrated on the eve of May 1st. Marking the height of spring and the promise of summer, Beltane is a festival of fertility, renewal, and the life force that flows through nature.

The Fire of Fertility

Traditionally, great bonfires were lit upon hills to honour Belenus, the Celtic sun god. People and livestock passed between the flames to receive blessings of health, protection, and fertility for the coming year. Fire at Beltane represents both purification and passion — the spark of life renewed.

Rituals of Renewal

Beltane is rich with fertility rites and customs that celebrate the union of male and female energies, symbolised by the Maypole dance, weaving coloured ribbons in patterns that echo the intertwining of life itself. Couples would “jump the fire” together, sealing bonds of love and fertility.

This festival also honours the Green Man — nature’s guardian and symbol of rebirth — who unites with the May Queen in a sacred marriage of land and spirit. Their union ensures the fertility of the earth, the abundance of crops, and the well-being of the community.
