Tarot Cards

What is the Tarot? For those unfamiliar the modern day Tarot deck is made up of 78 cards, 22 are called the Major Arcana and 56 the minor Arcana. The major Arcana are known as “trump Cards” The terms “Major” and “Minor Arcana” are used in the occult, and divinatory applications of the deck as in practising Esoteric Tarot and originate with Jean-Baptiste Pitois (1811–1877), writing under the name Paul Christian. No one know for sure where Tarot Cards originated although their is a popular myth that the 22 cards of the Major arcana originated in ancient Egypt. 

Éliphas Lévi who was a famous French Occultist worked to break away from the Egyptian nature of the divinatory tarot, bringing it back to the tarot de Marseilles, creating a “tortuous” kabbalistic correspondence, and even suggested that the Major Arcana represent stages of life. I started off reading Tarot cards just using the major Arcana as I agree with Levi that they are archetypes of life. The Marquis Stanislas de Guaita established the Major Arcana as an initiatory sequence to be used to establish a path of spiritual ascension and evolution. In 1980 Sallie Nichols, a Jungian psychologist, wrote up the tarot as having deep psychological and archetypal significance, even encoding the entire process of Jungian individuation into the tarot trumps. Carl Gustav Jung the famous Psychoanalyst was also a renowned Mystic, he placed great emphasis on Synchronicity and Tarot card archetypes believing them to be a mirror of the sub-conscious that a skilled interpreter could “read” “We can predict the future,” Jung stated, “when we know how the present moment evolved from the past.” This evolution of the present is linked to the past, just as the conscious mind is subjected to the unconscious: the Tarot card is a visible manifestation of this connection, a type of synchronicity that forces itself to rise to the surface, but requiring, just as an oracle does, an accurate interpretation.

The Tarot minor arcana of 56 cards were added in later years and comprise Cups, Wands, Pentacles and Swords. These represent in their spiritual aspect the four elements of Water, Fire, Earth, Air, and the most obvious connection is to the modern day playing cards with their fours suits of hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades.

There is nothing “Occult” about a Tarot card reading  just deep insight and intuition that has helped thousands on their path make decisions.
